Once inside, Reagan took charge. She had the Tenneys fix sheets and blankets on the couch for Sloane’s bed. Janet and Finn offered to get her ready for bed, but Reagan stopped them. “I got this.”

She’d done this every night since Sloane’s return from the hospital. After the first challenging evening, she developed a routine that worked. She’d change Sloane’s clothes, position an ottoman at the edge of the couch to give her more room to prop up her casted foot, and then pull her covers up and kiss her on the cheek. Sloane closed her eyes and fell asleep.

“She’ll be fine for a few hours.” Reagan padded to the kitchen. After filling a glass with water, she placed it along with aspirin and Sloane’s pain pills on a couch-side table.

“You do this every night for her?” Janet’s mouth was agape.

“Sure.” Reagan nodded and shrugged.

“You sweet, dear.” Janet pulled Reagan in for a tight hug. “You shouldn’t have to do this on your own.”

“We’re fine.” Reagan pried herself from Janet’s arms. “Eric helps when he’s not working.”

“But he goes home at night, right?” Janet received a nod from Reagan. “That’s it. I’m moving in with you until Sloane is back on her feet.”

Reagan wrestled with her grandmother’s offer. She could use the extra help when she returned to school. Then again, staying busy is what was helping her cope with her own grief. She had a routine, and if she kept to it, she wouldn’t have time to think about how much she missed her mother. “But—”

“No buts, young lady. You need time to grieve too. I’m staying.”
